An afternoon of snowmobiling took a tragic turn when the snowmobile his children were riding went through the ice and into the water. Private Arthur dove in to the hole in the ice and pulled out his daughter, then held onto his son until help arrived. Unfortunately, Private Ralph D. Arthur died some 40 minutes later at Riverside Hospital from the intense exposure he endured while rescuing his children.

Ralph D. Arthur was born on July 3, 1927. He was appointed to the Toledo Fire Department on November 16, 1951 and was assigned badge #248
