PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF THE TOLEDO FIRE AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT

Captain james fraser

Captain Fraser died in the line of duty during the Wonderland Block fire on January 3, 1894. Captain Fraser and Fireman Alfred Blaine became trapped on the third floor of the King Quayle Elevator, losing their way in the dense smoke. Fireman Blaine was able to follow the hose to a window, which he broke out and was rescued by his comrades. Captain Fraser, tragically, died in the ensuing fire and building collapse.

No trace was ever found of Captain Fraser, despite the search of the ruins for his remains. The only trace recovered was a melted brass nozzle and suspender buckles.

Captain Fraser was born in Ireland on November 27, 1836. He came to America in 1855 and sailed the Great Lakes for 17 years. He served for 15 years as a Pipeman and 3 years as a Ladderman. He was appointed Captain in 1889.
